Expansion of Bulgaria’s motorway network — image from the original website

The expansion of Bulgaria's motorway network continues; its current total length is 760 km.

The 117 km Maritsa motorway (A4) became Bulgaria’s third completed motorway and was officially inaugurated last Thursday. Part of Pan-European Corridor IV, Maritsa connects to the Trakia motorway, linking Sofia and Turkey.

On 22 October 2015, the Dupnitsa–Blagoevgrad section of the Struma motorway (A3), built by the Bulgarian-Italian “Struma-lot 2” consortium, opened to traffic. A short 3 km section of Sofia’s western ring road, an extension of the Lyulin motorway (A6), also opened.

Further procurement procedures are underway for major motorway sections. Strengthening the motorway network is a priority objective for Bulgaria, given its strategic geographical position.

The tenders published for the construction of Bulgaria’s motorway network have attracted companies from across the European Union and Turkey, as they represent a significant investment for the coming years, financed largely by European funds.
