Bulgaria, like Italy and the other EU countries, will change its method of calculating GDP by the end of the year. Bulgaria's National Statistical Institute (NSI) will begin calculating GDP using the new European System of Accounts 2010. “The method includes data on the ‘shadow economy’, such as prostitution and drug trafficking,” Elka Atanasova, head of the NSI's macroeconomic statistics department, said at a press conference. The introduction of the European System of Accounts 2010 was announced in June. According to Atanasova, the NSI will not conduct statistical surveys of drugs and prostitution, but will use information from official sources. The nominal change in GDP is estimated at between 2% and 6%. However, the NSI states that this will not change the GDP growth rate compared with earlier periods.
