Legal advice costs — internationalisation, investment, start-ups, corporate and international matters — image from the original website

In compliance with the professional ethics rules of the Bulgarian and Italian legal professions, the international law firm De Amicis & Petrova implements a transparency programme in the lawyer–client relationship, enabling professional work and interventions to be planned without surprises.

Our professional services are always agreed in a Contract, and fees are agreed before work begins on the basis of a written quotation forming an integral part of that Contract. This also applies to professional services of limited scope.

Preparing a fee estimate sometimes requires a preliminary assessment of the case, which is not charged to the client unless otherwise agreed.

Given the abolition of compulsory professional fee scales in Italy and considering that none exist in Bulgaria, fees are agreed with the client under one of the following arrangements:

Project basis: within a more complex engagement, fees are set for each project, and the client then chooses whether to activate the service and for which projects. Hourly basis: an hourly fee may be agreed, in line with international practice; hours worked are reported and settled periodically (generally monthly). Fixed fee: a specified fee is agreed for the entire engagement. Success fee: under this arrangement, the fee consists of a fixed component (the retainer) and a success fee payable only if the project has a favourable outcome, under the terms agreed with the client. Schedule of fees: another arrangement, especially useful for litigation, is a fee schedule: a fee is agreed for each possible activity, and only those actually carried out are charged (for example, drafting a pleading or attending a hearing).

The arrangement for each case is chosen according to the client's needs and the specific assistance to be provided.

It should always be borne in mind, however, that it is unwise to ask how much a professional costs before calculating how much an amateur might cost.

Never entrust your interests to fixers or unqualified consultants.
