Bulgarian National Day, 3 March 2016 — image from the original website

Today Bulgaria marks the 138th anniversary of its liberation from five centuries of Ottoman rule, also known as the National Day.

On this day in 1878, Russia and the Ottoman Empire signed a preliminary peace treaty at San Stefano, a small village near Istanbul. The Treaty of San Stefano ended the Russo-Turkish War and put Bulgaria back on the political map.

3 March is commemorated with ceremonies throughout the country, particularly solemn in the towns where Russian and Bulgarian soldiers fought victorious battles in the War of Liberation of 1877–1878.

Best wishes to all Bulgarian citizens!
