The Bulgarian Rose — image from the original website

Rose In the heart of Bulgaria, between Karlovo and Kazanlak, the extensive Valley of Roses opens up among the mountains. It is famous for its large-scale flower cultivation and the world's largest production of rose essential oil. During the flowering season, from late May to the first half of June, a strong fragrance fills the entire valley, which is covered in brightly coloured roses, while local villages hold traditional festivals to celebrate the flower harvest. Cultivation dates back more than 350 years, when an ancient rose variety was imported from the Middle East and North Africa and found a perfect habitat in this valley, protected by an excellent microclimate. Since then, harvesting has followed traditional techniques requiring skill and patience. Two excellent rose varieties are also grown in the valley: the delicate damask rose in white, pink and red, and the Trigintipetala or “Kazanlak rose”, with its lasting fragrance. These two varieties produce an exceptionally pure essential oil, sold for herbal and cosmetic uses. In the surrounding area, visitors can tour perfume producers and the many distilleries that developed around rose production, and buy fine bottles of liqueur or extract.
